It’s the Ham-burglar!

A Pennsylvania man known to police as the “ham-burglar” made quite a splash on Saturday when he tried to elude authorities in Connellsville by jumping into a freezing cold river. It didn’t go so well for him, reports KDKA.

Shawn Prince was trying to get away from police, who had handcuffed him for outstanding bench warrants, but Prince’s capture quickly became a rescue after his attempted escape into the Youghiogheny River. As police were transporting Prince into the station, he broke free from officers and jumped into the river.

Fayette County EMS and the New Haven Fire Department, who have a river rescue unit, were both called, and officials tossed him a rope and pulled him out.

Prince was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital for hypothermia where he was treated and released. Then he was taken to the Fayette County Prison.

Prince was nicknamed “the ham-burglar” by cops in Fayette and Westmoreland counties because last April, they caught him on camera stealing $450 worth of hams from the local Shop ‘n Save.
