One inmate in New Mexico got really lucky this weekend when he was confused for a different inmate and accidentally released from prison.
Police are now hunting for Duwin Perez-Cordova — who has been charged with attempted murder — after they drove him to downtown Albuquerque and dropped him off for release. Authorities issued a statement Sunday to try and fix the blunder by asking the public to help find Perez-Cordova.
Perez-Cordova, was charged with eight crimes in December 2017, many of which are violent, including attempted murder, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, shooting at an occupied building, aggravated battery, receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle, trafficking controlled substances, racketeering and conspiracy.
Prison officials said they have no explanation for the awkward mix-up despite dropping him off just two blocks away from an elementary school. He is now wanted on an active felony warrant for escape from custody.
“An internal investigation by MDC officials is underway to determine how this happened, but the current focus is apprehending Perez-Cordova,” Metropolitan Detention Center said in a statement.
