Explore Underwater Archaeology

Ready to dive into Wisconsin’s Shipwrecks? The Wisconsin Maritime Museum, located at 75 Maritime Drive in Manitowoc, is hosting Victoria Kiefer, a maritime archaeologist from the Wisconsin Historical Society for a presentation on Wisconsin shipwrecks from the Goodrich Steamship Line.

The program marks the return of the museum’s Saturday Learning Series. The cost is only $5, or included with your full museum admission.  Museum programs are FREE for museum members. The program begins at 1:00 p.m. and wraps up at 2pm.

May is Archaeology Month in Wisconsin, with special events celebrating Wisconsin’s remarkable archaeological resources and the investigation of those sites and artifacts.  As the state’s official repository for underwater cultural resources, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is excited to host this presentation highlighting research from the Office of the State Archaeologist.

“The cold, fresh water of the Great Lakes preserves Wisconsin’s shipwrecks like nowhere else in the world,” says Cathy Green, the Deputy Director of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. “Retelling the stories contained in those shipwreck sites is a powerful way to connect our visitors the maritime influences that shaped the region.”

The program will explore the history and archaeology of several Wisconsin shipwrecks from the Goodrich Steamship Line. Visitors will learn about the 77 year history of the passenger and packet freight company established by Albert E. Goodrich and the archaeological investigations of three of the Goodrich vessels, the tug Arctic and the steamers Atlanta and Wisconsin.

“The vibrant images this team of archaeologists has gathered is nothing short of stunning,” says Green. The incredible photography and compelling stories will be of interest to a wide variety of visitors, from armchair historians, avid divers, and families looking to engage in multi-generational activities.

While at the museum, visitors can check out the new exhibit about another shipwreck story featuring the USS Lagarto.  The Lagarto is a Manitowoc-built WWII submarine on “eternal patrol” in the Gulf of Thailand, rediscovered by divers only a few years ago, and commemorated each May at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
