Charges for Getting Sick in Car Goes to Good Samaritan

No good deed goes unpunished.

WHAM reports that a Good Samaritan in Rochester, New York paid for a woman to get a ride home from a bar, but after the woman got sick in the car, he was the one to get charged for damages.

Malcolm Whitfield was in a bar in November when he saw a woman who needed a ride, so he used his Lyft app and got her a ride home on his account.

15 minutes later, the Lyft driver texted him.

Whitfield said, “I get a text from him saying, ‘She just threw up in my car.’ I was like, ‘that’s bad! Let me just double your tip.”

The next day, however, Whitfield was stunned to end up with a $150 charge from Lyft to clean the car.

Ride shares apps like Uber and Lyft are new to Rochester and many people aren’t aware of the terms and conditions. Fees for damages and cleaning can go up to $250.

Whitfield said, “When Lyft sent me the pictures, I was like, ‘Oh no! I don’t want to look!’ It’s a bummer, but I know at least now, don’t throw up in a Lyft or Uber. That is something I learned!”

Whitfield said the woman initially refused to pay the fee, but as of this weekend agree to pay the $150 in damages.

She says she didn’t know about Lyft’s damage policies either.
