The Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo & Adventure Park is pleased to announce the arrival of a 2 year old male lion from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program Leader for African Lions determined that Loiwotwa (aka Loid, pronounced like Lloyd) is a good match for female Ajia and it looks as if the lions agree.
The two cats are currently getting to know each other off exhibit and although the progression of the introduction is up to them, things are looking good!
Loiwotwa means “the wanderer” and this lion is named after a wild lion who had been monitored by the Ewaso Lions project, an organization that works in Kenya to connect local people with lion conservation projects. AZA Zoos are committed to not only providing the best possible lives for the animals in their care but also to supporting field conservation partners like Ewaso Lions. Every time you visit the NEW Zoo or any other AZA accredited zoo, you are making a difference for animals in the wild.
BREAKING NEWS: Loid seems to be adjusting well and is expected to be on exhibit during the Brew at the Zoo & Wine Too event on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8:30 (this after hours event requires a special event ticket – see our website at https://newzoo.org for information and tickets). Now is your chance to be one of the first to welcome him to his new home! It is yet to be determined if Ajia will be joining him for his big debut, but we are hopeful.
