Testimony began today (Monday) in the trial of a northwest Wisconsin woman accused of texting right before a crash that killed three of her young relatives. Thirty-five-year-old Kari Jo Milberg of Centuria faces three felony counts of homicide by negligent driving, and one misdemeanor count of injury by reckless driving. Pierce County prosecutors say Milberg was sending and receiving chat messages just before her S-U-V collided with a truck on Highway 35 near Prescott in December of 2013. Investigators found Milberg’s cellphone soon after the snow melted. Milberg’s attorney has suggested the defendant’s daughter may have been the one using the phone. Milberg’s eleven-year-old daughter Lydia was killed, along with her five-year-old nieces Clara Pavek and Laynie Jo Amos. The trial is expected to last all week.
